The Project
Mr. Huey's U.S. History and Mrs. Roderick's Enriched English 9 classes have teamed up for a collaborative unit on the Holocaust.
Junior and Senior students were partnered with Freshmen and assigned a specific topic regarding the Holocaust. In groups, they designated roles, researched as a group and individuals, and created a text via Weebly. Students collaborated to gather information and create informational, solidly constructed compositions to be shared with their classes.
The classes received a grant from Ancestry.com to use Fold3 by Ancestry and Ancestry Classroom to sift through The Holocaust Collection, which partnered with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to archive primary source documents and personal accounts connected with this tragic event. Students were able to access documents such as military records, war crime documents, photographs, registry and death lists from concentration camps, and much more. They could also access personal records that have been documented on Ancestry via the Ancestry Classroom--For example, they could search for relatives that may have served during WWII.
Partnering these classes allowed students to collaborate in a unique environment. Many of our upperclassmen stepped into leadership roles by managing their teams. All students were able to engage in a research project that introduced them to/reinforced their knowledge of digital archiving, primary sources, and synthesizing information.
