Mary Oliver has been mesmerized by the natural world ever since she was a child growing up in Ohio. She has also been enthralled by poetry. "I decided very early that I wanted to write," she says. "It was the most exciting thing, the most powerful thing, the most wonderful thing to do with my life." So she did it. Many years and countless awards later, Oliver still loves writing. "I feel writing is work, and I feel it's also play--bound together," she explains.
